No matter what Disney park you visit, you enter a doorway to the most magical of places. It really does have this special aura to it, leaving each guest smiling with joyous memories to live on for a lifetime. This was the case for me at Disneyland California. A very different park from the Walt Disney World resort in Florida, The California experience brings guests the nostalgia upheld from the days Walt walked through the park combined with the new favourites we have grown to love after Walt’s passing in 1966. Although smaller than Walt Disney World, the Disneyland California park has a magic to it unlike any other Disney property. If you are one of those die hard Disney fans who enjoys not only the current offerings and trends, but also likes to delve into the history of the empire and about the man who started it all with a Mouse, perhaps you will want to consider taking the Walk in Walt’s Footsteps tour and learn more about Walt’s passions, his favourite attractions, and how he enjoyed his time backstage while in the park.

Fantasyland Ride – One of Walt’s Favourites

So when we did the tour, we were taken on an exclusive ride of the Alice and Wonderland attraction in Fantasyland. This ride gave perspective on Walt’s creativity with an epic story written years prior to his birth and how it evolved through the incredible animation efforts of his team. The Alice in Wonderland ride is chosen for this tour as the lines are less hectic to navigate as opposed to battling those of Peter Pan’s Flight or Snow White’s Scary Adventures. In the end, we loved this ride and seeing all the colours and animatronics bringing the film and its characters to life. It was a great advantage as well to enjoy the ride without the need of lining up with other guests.

New Orleans Square

The Walk in Walt’s Footsteps tour next takes guests through New Orleans Square where you will see Lillian’s tree planted there with a special ceremony, Royal 21, an exclusive spot Walt and special guests enjoyed unmatched views of the park and unique attractions. You don’t get to walk up the steps, but you do feel slightly posh at knowing of this exclusive spot enjoyed by the Disneys themselves. I particularly love New Orleans Square at Disneyland. It is home to the original Haunted Mansion that celebrated 50 years in 2019, mouthwatering Beignets shaped like Mickey heads, and random cameos  of the Princess and the Frog characters! I LOVED that Dr Facilier roamed the area and I could get a photo without a stressful and lengthy line. The tour won’t stop here for long other than to explain some of the original attractions and to disclose the location of Club 33, but do return on your own time for beignets, Mardi Gras props, and to nab photos with Tiana herself.

Great Moments with Mr Lincoln

Walt had a passion for his home country. Demonstrating patriotism was important to him in the parks and so he came up with the revolutionary Great Moments with Mr Lincoln attraction. This attraction wasn’t without its challenges being one of the first animatronic figures created and presented at Royal Fair in the fifties. It was the original of his patriotic attractions that paved the way for the Hall of Presidents featured in Liberty Square at Walt Disney World.

I love when lunch is included in the tours. In this instance, you get to choose from a menu of options. When you sign in for the tour at the beginning, you are given the menu of choices. You get a main, a dessert, and a beverage. The lunches are all cooked and made at the Jolly Holiday Bakery on Main Street and are divine. You cannot go wrong with the Matterhorn Macaroon! Seriously – YUM.

Ultimate Highlight: Walt’s Apartment Viewing

So there are many reasons I highly recommend this tour; however, the main one is the opportunity to see Walt’s Disneyland apartment located above the Main Street Fire Station. The main reason for my desire to take this tour, seeing the exact spot the Disneys enjoyed respite while conducting business on site, was truly amazing. It is indeed the perfect conclusion to the morning tour and the cast members allow one photograph per camera/phone per guest so no trying to sneak additional pics!
