A Dreamer’s Decision to Travel More

It sounds so simple. Travel more. However, this New Year’s resolution of mine involves completely changing the way I look at travelling. I found my love for travelling after studying abroad at Rikkyo University in Tokyo, Japan during the spring of 2016. I’d been on vacations before then, but it wasn’t until I went out of the country for the first time that I realized just how vast and varied the world was. After I returned home from my study abroad program, I found myself yearning for the same “new adventure” experience I’d had in Japan. I had caught the travel bug.

Before going to Japan, I only went on trips every few years, usually when I was going on vacation with family or competing in martial arts tournaments. That wasn’t enough anymore though. Over the last year and a half, I started taking more trips, if only to stave off the wanderlust. I took every opportunity to go someplace new, whether it was just a few hours’ drive from my hometown or a ten-hour flight. I now knew that there was so much more to the world than just the small snapshot I had gotten of it in my hometown. I wanted to see just how much more there was to the world.

However, after getting more involved in the travel blogging community and looking back over the last year and a half, I realized that I still saw travel as a vacation, as a luxury of sorts. I had built extensive lists of places I wanted to go on websites such as Pinterest and Flipboard, but somehow it all still seemed like a dream to me. I knew that if I put the effort in, I could visit any place I wanted…. So, why hadn’t I?

I didn’t make travel a priority.

I’ve been talking about wanting to see the Grand Canyon in in Arizona, USA for a while now, so why do I still not have any plans to go? I still see travel as a dream, as something that I can only do if the opportunity arises. This year, I’m going to make more of an effort to turn my dreams into reality. I don’t want travel to be something I do. I want it to be a way of life.

Turning My Travel Dreams into Trips

I think one of the biggest obstacles that sometimes stands in the way of making my travel dreams turn into reality is simply the fact that I have SO MANY places I want to go. How in the world do I ever decide where to go next? I think sitting down and actually making a list of the places I want to visit will be a good start to actually making travel plans.

Personally, I love travel planning. I love doing all the research to figure out all of the things I would want to do and see at a particular destination and figuring out how to fit it all into the time I have available. However, as I start making my list of places I want to make an effort to visit, I will likely get carried away. I wouldn’t be surprised if I looked up from my list and realized I had over 100 places on it! Some of my travel blogging friends that travel full time visited 33 different countries in 2017. As somebody who has a full-time desk job and only so much vacation in a year, I doubt I’ll visit 33 different countries this year. However, being aware of those constraints will allow me to optimize my travel plans to get the most out of the time I do have.

Making Plans

This will probably be the more intensive part of my New Year’s Resolution, but it’s the most crucial. Once I’ve figured out where I want to go, I’ll sit down and figure out how long I want to be at each of my destinations and how much it will cost to do all the things I want. Once that is all figured out, I’ll set it in stone. I’ll request the time off work, I’ll build saving for the trip into my financial budget, and most importantly I’ll say I’m going. It may not be for several months (and depending on the size of the trip, a few years), but I’m going. I’m on my way to accomplishing my New Year’s Resolution.
