We loved it there and compiled a great list of things to do in Huntsville Ontario for all of you to consider.
Things to Do in Huntsville Ontario
The Group of Seven Outdoor Gallery
I’m sure the Group of Seven has crossed your path in conversation now and then. Well, that is for good reason. They are some of the most famous artists in Canadian history. Their paintings have been loved and admired for centuries by Canadians and all those who visit and appreciate their works in endless galleries around the world.
Book a Tour: From Toronto: Algonquin Park 3-Day Tour
Here in Huntsville, this fine artistic group are recognized and honoured with an outdoor mural gallery with giant replicas of their famous paintings. They were prolific landscape painters whose path to creative notoriety took them everywhere in the province from here all the way North to the beautiful and untouched Agawa Canyon. Grab a map from the official Tourism office at City hall and tick off each of the 30+ murals found within the town. This isn’t all of them by the way…murals of the Group of Seven are displayed throughout the Muskoka region all the way up through Northern Ontario. But, Huntsville is a start anyway!
Pay tribute to one the Group of Seven’s pioneers and most decorated artists. A statue was erected for this young man who only lived 40 years, in front of the Town Hall. He was highly regarded in the region for his contribution to the art heritage of the area, his colourful and artistic vision, and his beautiful appreciation for wilderness and natural beauty of Huntsville all the way to Algonquin Park.
You cannot leave this charming town without checking out some of the local independent shops! Here are a few that were our favourites and visiting them on your itinerary is one of the best things to do in Huntsville Ontario.
Christmas is on all year round in Huntsville with this lovely family owned shop on the main strip. Check out the large variety of ornaments including ones to personalize, pop culture favourites, woodland collections, Santa Claus dolls and figures, and much more. We particularly loved the frosted glass lanterns, the bird ornaments, and the 7-foot Santa Claus in the middle of the shop.
The Nutty Chocolatier
I adore local candy shoppes when exploring towns. So of course when looking for things to do while in Huntsville Ontario, I just had to stop in and explore the Nutty Chocolatier Candy shoppe. A family-owned emporium of homemade chocolate, truffles, and ice cream offerings, with sprinkled commercial candies and gifts, this is the perfect spot for a break, a treat, or to stock up on presents for friends and family. I especially loved the ice cream cone sign just outside the shop. It is as old as the shop and an icon in town. The owners told me the line for ice cream spans quite long outside in the summer making it the busiest season for them.
Walk Along the Water
One of the best things to do in Huntsville Ontario is walking along the boardwalk! I loved seeing the water, the snow melting along the shore (we went in winter), the little cafes crossing my path, and feeling the magic of cottage country.
Take a Photo with “Moosekokie”
Head down from the main street and have a seat with Moosekokie! He not only has a Muskoka chair for you to sit while you take the picture, but also his own Instagram hashtag and story. This lovely Moose statue has travelled around the world for various causes and events, but most recently and most significantly he has travelled coast to coast in Canada. After each trip Moosekokie rests in Huntsville and loves taking selfies with visitors.
Where to Eat in Huntsville Ontario
If you are looking for a lovely spot for fresh food, vegan options, and homemade smoothies, Soul Sistas has your back. In particular we highly recommend the cold rolls and protein shakes. They have daily specials as well which you may enjoy in between sightseeing and ticking of the Group of Seven murals.
So there you have our recommendations for the best things to do in Huntsville Ontario. Make sure you stop in while on your vacation in the Muskokas or while on your Ontario road trip. If you get there, say hi to Moosekokie for me!
