These Champagne Experiences Are Perfect for Valentine’s Day
Now who doesn’t LOVE a nice glass of bubbly? Champagne and Prosecco have the attached celebration stereotype to them and for good reason! The popping of the cork, the fizzy sensation on the taste buds, and all the special toasts written and expressed make for a beautiful experience. Valentine’s day is a great time to have a bubbly indulgence. And I am not alone in my thinking! I called on some of my blogging BFFs for some great champagne experiences – bars, accommodations, and other great once in a lifetime hot spots. As February 14 is just around the corner, seriously think about adding a bottle to your festivities. I say this because Champagne experiences are perfect for Valentine’s Day.
These Champagne Experiences Are Perfect for Valentine’s Day…
Sparkling Wine Tasting – Sonoma Valley California
If you’re wine tasting in the Sonoma County region of California, J Vineyards + Winery is an absolute must for lovers of sparkling wine. Located just south of Healdsburg in the heart of the Russian River Valley, J is a certified sustainable winery, and is unique because it’s one of the few wineries in California to offer food pairings with its sparkling wine tastings. If you visit J Vineyards, make sure to do the Legacy tasting, so that you have a place to sit down, and plenty of room for all of the glasses. Go the extra mile to elevate your tasting by ordering the optional cheese plate, which includes a cheese that is meant to be enjoyed with each of the five sparkling wines. The pairings are incredible! The cheeses bring out such a different taste to each of the sparkling wines, so having the complementary pairing will bring another dimension to your experience. Don’t miss the vintage sparkling wines, or the sparkling rosé, which stand out from the impressive pack! A word of warning if you visit J: leave some room in your suitcase for a bottle or two to bring home.
Champagne Hot Air Balloon Flight – Albuquerque New Mexico
I always used to think the only occasion that deemed drinking at 8 AM was college homecoming and move in week. On my first road trip to the Southwest US, I was proven wrong. It’s always been a dream of mine to go for a hot air balloon ride, so when I saw they were available in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I almost signed up before even asking my road trip companion. He was hesitant, but I convinced him and booked immediately. The day came and I begrudgingly woke up at 5 AM, then as soon as we got into the van with our pilot, I realized what I was doing and was more than OK with it. I helped set up the balloon, one of the only things I’ve ever volunteered for in a group setting, the other was to play Vanna White for something in my college French class in case you were wondering. Before I knew it, we were climbing into the basket, dipping into the Rio Grande, and admiring the sunrise over the Sandia mountains. Our time came to an end too quickly and soon we were tumbling out of the basket onto the grass in a neighborhood park. The champagne was chilled and waiting for the traditional post balloon ride toast to begin.
Champagne atop the London Eye – London, UK
When my husband and I planned a week-long trip to Cape Town for New Years Eve 2015, we were a bit dismayed by the price of airline tickets—until we found an incredible deal that required a 13-hour layover in London. While many people would think such a layover is undesirable, we couldn’t believe our good fortune. 13 hours in one of our favorite cities? We couldn’t book the flight fast enough!
We planned most of our itinerary together, but I saved a special surprise for our final few hours in the city. I booked a sunset champagne experience on the London Eye for my husband’s Christmas present, and as night fell on London’s gorgeous skyline we boarded our capsule for a 30-minute rotation high above the city. Sipping champagne as we watched London light up below us became one of the most magical moments we have shared during our travels. It gave us a chance to admire London from a new vantage point, recharge before our long flight to Cape Town, and toast to our continued travels and all of the incredible experiences we otherwise would never get to have together. We would have enjoyed the London Eye no matter what, but sharing some champagne really made it a special experience!
What’s the traditional way to open a bottle of bubbly? With a sword, of course!
Stellenbosch is the wine capital of Africa – a place that no visit to South Africa would be complete without. Just a few hours’ drive outside Cape Town, the city is home to hundreds of vineyards and wineries that I just couldn’t wait to visit, especially as it was my birthday the day we stopped by!
To celebrate my birthday, our guide had organised a very special wine tasting at Simonsig, one of the oldest vineyards in the area. We sipped and sniffed and slurped eight delicious wines from the estate, before our guide emerged from the vineyard shop holding a bottle of South African sparkling wine in one hand and a sword in the other. Yes, you read that right, a sword.
We were all a bit confused until he told us it was the traditional way to open a bottle of bubbly, and he wanted me to give it a go! Too scared to try, I passed the baton to my husband who sliced off the cork like a pro! Despite its extravagance, it was a wonderful experience and one I won’t be forgetting in a hurry. And yes, the wine tasted good too!
The dreamy Champagne Tower Suite of Cove Haven Resort in Pennsylvania, US
Hubby and I are always looking for unique, romantic experiences and one of our most memorable travel moments was enjoying a bubble bath in a champagne glass-shaped whirlpool at Cove Haven Resort. Yes, you can now soak inside a large, champagne glass bubble bath together! I couldn’t believe it either when I saw it for the first time. For an even more luxurious experience, we recommend purchasing one of the romantic gift packages which include chocolates, candles, champagne and champagne flutes which is now our favorite keepsake from our travels.
This brilliant suite also comes with its own heart-shaped plunge pool, two-person shower, fireplace and a large, round bed surrounded by mirrors. Exciting activities to enjoy in the resort include speed boat tours, sharing tasty cocktails at a heart-shaped bar, dining in a Colosseum themed restaurant, shopping at the gift shop, watching movies at the on-site cinema, blissful massages, picnics at the garden gazebo, exploring the nature trial to find the Kissing Tree and much more.
It’s definitely a relaxing, romantic experience we will never forget and highly recommend to other champagne lovers seeking a wonderful romantic, value-packed getaway!
We reached Hvar Town via a ferry from Split, and were efficiently transported to our boutique resort – Little Green Bay. True to its name, it was very private and bohemian. The first view of its secluded green bay just wowed me.
But there was more to come.
There is no formal reception area to check-in here. We were whisked to the restaurant and served the welcome drink.
Stampar Pjenusac – from the Međimurje region in Croatia. The Međimurje region in northern Croatia is the one where some of the best Croatian wines are made. Fertile, scenic and packed with vineyards and orchards, this area sees few tourists. This glass of bubbly was perfect for an aperitif. The champagne glass is somewhere from Paris. Such an awesome find of the trip for me – both the sparkling wine and the unique glass in which it is served.
