Summer is the perfect time to enjoy a glass of wine on the patio, by the pool, or just with family and friends. But heading to a winery where the magical infusion of fruity and spicy notions takes place, makes the experience all the more flavourful and satisfying. The Finger Lakes region of New York State is a kingdom for wine snobs lovers to try different flavours and different blends. Teresa, the blogger behind the wonderful site Type A Trekker, grew up in the area and to us is a local sommelier who has sampled many of the delicious wines and spirits curated in the region and in particular, on the Cayuga Wine Trail.

The Finger Lakes Region is a beautiful part of what makes Upstate New York one of my favourite places. On top of gorgeous waterfalls, great hiking and wonderful people, the Finger Lakes also have some amazing wineries. Most have their own unique wine trail looping around the lake. The two wine trails I have done (and love) are Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake. I grew up in Ithaca (on Cayuga Lake), so the Cayuga Wine Trail is definitely my favourite. Plus, it’s America’s first wine trail!

All of the wineries are scattered among the hills surrounding the lake, and many offer incredible views. Plus, all of them are run by locals, so you can be confident you are supporting a local business. If your goal is to see all the wineries I recommend attending one of the wine trails events. You get a discounted rate to taste wine at all the wineries, plus an additional gift at each winery. For example, during the Christmas tour you get an ornament at each winery. Otherwise you will need a car, and a designated driver, or rent a van/bus to get you from winery to winery. Cayuga Wine Trail is made up of 14 wineries and each one is distinctive- you can’t go wrong going to any or all of these wonderful wineries. Here is a list of some of my favorite wineries on the Cayuga Wine Trail:

  • Americana: Located in Trumansburg, this winery is the home of two adorable dogs, who are always eager for a pet. Their wines are classic dinner party gifts in the area. They also serve great food and host many events. Some of their most popular events are their Halloween party, and the outdoor concerts they host in the summer.

  • Thirsty Owl: This charming winery surprised me with what I loved the most – their mac and cheese! It is complimented by bright white wines, and the charming decor tops off this unique stop.

  • Lucas: I can’t name the many reasons I love this winery. They have some very yummy wines- some great sweet and semi-sweet ones. The staff are always friendly and more than willing to guide you through a tasting!
